Defenders beat Sea Dogs 3-1 with eight shutout innings from Begg

Chris Begg kept his outfielders bored all night long, as he recorded thirteen ground ball outs in eight shutout innings of work while also striking out five in a 3-1 victory for the Defenders over the Portland Sea Dogs.
The scheduled double header was shortened to one nine-inning game, with rain delaying the start. Sea Dogs starter Devern hansack made few mistakes, but the Defenders hit those mistakes a long way. Randy Walter led off the bottom of the first inning with his third home run of the year on the second pitch thrown by Hansack. Three batters later, Travis Ishikawa followed Walter's lead with his eighth blast of the year to give Connecticut a 2-0 lead. In the second inning, after a two out walk to Jake Wald, Clay Timpner hit an RBI triple to the corner in right field to make the score 3-0.
Hansack was solid after that, at one point retiring ten straight Defenders, but it didn't matter. Chris Begg kept his infielders busy. Jake Wald had six assists on the game, as Begg secured his 6th win of the season. Things got shaky in the 9th inning as Billy Sadler struggled with his control, but with a run in, and two Sea Dogs on base and nobody out, Joe Bateman came in from the bullpen, and sat down three in a row to secure his 7th save of the year in a 3-1 Defenders win.
The other game that was supposed to be played on Tuesday will be made up on Wednesday as part of a double header with both games scheduled for seven innings beginning at 6:05. Portland will send a couple of right handers to the mound in Scott Shoemaker, making his first start with the Sea Dogs in 2006, and Luis Mendoza (0-1). Right hander Garrett Broshuis and southpaw Geno Espineli will go for the Defenders. The order of the starters is TBA.
