Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Aberdeen, MD- IronBirds starter Jeff Moore won his second straight outing and the Aberdeen IronBirds swept the Staten Island Yankees behind a 2-1 win on Independence Day in Aberdeen.

Moore (2-0) began the night as the league's ERA leader after tossing 12 scoreless innings to open the season. Moore allowed a run on three hits in six innings to help Aberdeen win its fourth in a row.

The series sweep was Aberdeen's first since an abbreviated two-game sweep of Hudson Valley last August 16-17. The IronBirds last swept Staten Island during a two game series in June, 2004.

The IronBirds opened the scoring in the 1st when Chris Vinyard laced a two out single to score Bobby Andrews from second base.

Staten Island tied the score in the 2nd when Kevin Smith hit a leadoff triple and scored on a Tim O'Brien groundout. The Yankees nearly added a second run in the frame but IronBirds leftfielder Corey Shafer threw a perfect strike to home to nab Brian Aragon, who tried to score from second base on a single.

Aberdeen reclaimed the lead in the 3rd when Miguel Abreu doubled to left, stole third and scored when Yankees catcher Jose Gil threw the ball into left field.

It turned out that the two runs were all Moore needed, as he set down nine of 10 Yankee hitters at one point and retired the final six men he faced in order.

Julio Soriano worked two perfect innings with three strikeouts before Brett Bordes worked the 9th for his third save.
