Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
ONEONTA, NY --- Not only did the 5-3 New York-Penn League victory at Damaschke Field by Vermont on Tuesday afternoon give the Lake Monsters a 3-3 record on the six-game roadtrip, but it snapped an 11-game losing streak against the Oneonta Tigers.
Vermont, which was 0-5 against the Tigers in 2006 after dropping the final six meetings between the teams last season, had also lost 10 straight games at Oneonta dating back to August 25, 2004.
Things didn't start well for Vermont on Tuesday as the Lake Monsters committed two errors in the first inning to give the Tigers an unearned run. But Vermont would take a 5-1 lead with two runs in the third, one in the fourth and two more runs in the sixth.
Michael Martinez had an RBI single and Michael Daniel an RBI forceout to give Vermont a 2-1 lead. Erick San Pedro, who had two hits to extend hitting streak to five games, made it 3-1 with an RBI double down the rightfield line in the fourth. The Lake Monsters got their final two runs in the fifth on a two-out, two-run double down the leftfield line from Francisco Guzman off Oneonta starter Jeff Gerbe (0-1).
Oneonta had plenty of chances to get back into the game as Vermont pitchers retired the Tigers in order just once in the game, a 1-2-3 third inning. But despite nine hits and seven walks, Oneonta went 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position and left 14 runners on base.
The Tigers did cut the lead to 5-3 with two runs in the seventh off reliever Cole Kimball and had the bases loaded, but reliever Chris Lugo got second baseman Louis Ott to foul out to leftfield to end the threat. Oneonta got two singles in the eighth and one in the ninth off Zechry Zinicola, who was able to pick up his second save of the season with two scoreless innings.
Daniel, who had gone 5-for-5 on Monday night, was 2-for-5 on Tuesday to extend his current hitting streak to seven straight games (12-for-27). San Pedro and Ryan Delaughter both had their first multi-hit games of the season with two hits, while Demetri White (1-0) allowed one unearned run on three hits over five innings for his first win.
Vermont (5-10) will return home to historic Centennial Field to begin a three-game homestand against the Lowell Spinners, an affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, on Wednesday beginning at 7:05 p.m. The series will continue with single games at 7:05 p.m. Thursday and Friday, including a post-game fireworks show on Friday to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of baseball at Centennial Field.
