Connecticut Defenders News Release

The Connecticut Defenders dropped their seventh straight game to the Trenton Thunder thanks to an eight inning, two hit performance by Jeff Karstens, by a score of 3-0.

The Defenders got a lead off hit in the top of the first by Clay Timpner, who was promptly picked off. No Defender hitter would reach base from that point on until Derin McMains was drilled with a pitch in the 9th inning. On the other end, Jesse Floyd pitched well for Connecticut but hit a bump in the road in the 4th inning when he followed a Randy Ruiz double with a walk to Eric Duncan. With two men out, Felix Escalona hit an RBI single to score Ruiz, but the throw from left fielder Brian Horwitz hit the runner, Ruiz, and bounced away allowing Duncan to come around to score as well.

Trenton added to the lead with a solo home run by Ruiz in the 6th, making the score 3-0. Karstens would need no more help as he worked into the 9th inning, striking out six Defenders. In the 9th after he hit McMains to lead off the inning, Brian Munhall picked up a single for the Defenders second and final hit. It did however bring the tying run to the plate and force Trenton to use their bullpen. Justin Pope answered the call by striking out Jake Wald and getting Timpner to ground into the 1-6-3 game ending double play.

The loss makes seven in a row to end the road trip through Portland and Trenton. The Defenders also tie a franchise record with their 14th shutout loss of the season. They head home to begin a three game series with the Harrisburg Senators. On Tuesday, James Garcia (0-1) will work against Justin Echols (5-3) in a battle of right-handers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
