Jose Vaquedano (5-2) put together his finest outing of the season, holding Connecticut scoreless over six innings as the Sea Dogs beat the Defenders, 5-4 on Thursday night at Hadlock Field.
Vaquedano scattered three hits, walked two and fanned three to earn his third win at home.
James Garcia (0-1) suffered the loss for Connecticut, allowing three runs and three hits in six innings. Garcia made the start for Matt Palmer (Eastern League leader in ERA 1.3), who was promoted to Triple-A Fresno earlier in the day.
Jeremy West, Brandon Moss and Alberto Concepcion went 2-for-4 to pace Portland's 7-hit attack. The 'Dogs took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a two-out RBI double by West. Moss drew a bases loaded walk in the second inning and scored on a West single in the seventh.
Concepcion gave Portland a 3-0 advantage in the sixth inning with an RBI single to center field.
Connecticut used the long ball to rally back against the Sea Dogs' bullpen. Nate Schierholtz began the seventh inning with a solo home run off Frank Brooks. Brian Munhall blasted a three-run homer off Victor Ramos in the ninth inning, cutting the lead to one but Ramos retired the final two batters to end the game.
