Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
HARLINGEN - White Wings Manager Eddie Dennis has announced the signing of former Milwaukee Brewers lefthanded pitcher Rafael Roque, who will bring his 14 years of professional baseball experience to Harlingen.
Roque, 34, has spent the past four seasons in the Mexican League. A native of the Dominican Republic, Roque pitched in the Majors for the Brewers from 1998 to 2000. His best year there came in 1998, when he compiled a 4-2 record with a 4.88 ERA in 48 innings pitched. In 2000 at AAA Indianapolis, he was 9-4 with a 4.15 ERA in 132 innings pitched. And in 2001 at Class AAA Pawtucket, Roque was 8-5 with a 4.20 ERA in 98.2 innings pitched. While only pitching 1.2 innings in 2005, Roque did pitch for the Tigres from 2002 to 2004 in the Mexican League. He was 8-0 with a 2.73 ERA in 2002 in 79 innings pitched, followed by a 10-6 year with a 3.25 ERA in 116 innings pitched in 2003. Roque finished his '04 season with a 7-4 mark and 4.02 ERA in 80 innings pitched.
All told, Roque, a 6-4, 180-pounder, has logged 137 innings in the Major Leagues and 1,213 innings in the minor leagues since being signed as a nondrafted free agent by the New York Mets in 1991.
'We are extremely excited to bring in a pitcher of the quality of Rafael," stated White Wings General Manager Cory Dirksen. 'He should do a number of things for the ballclub, including mentoring our young pitchers. He will help put us in a better position to win and take pressure off our bullpen."
The WhiteWings, part of the six-team ULB, are scheduled to open the 2006 season Tuesday, May 16, against the Edinburg Coyotes at 7:05 p.m. at Harlingen Field. Other teams in the league include Laredo, San Angelo, Amarillo and Alexandria, LA. Each team will play a 90 game regular season schedule with 45 home and away dates. The regular season will conclude Aug. 23, and the playoffs will be completed by Labor Day.
