Beach Bums sign high round draft pick

TRAVERSE CITY, MI, April 10, 2006: The Traverse City Beach Bums are excited to announce the signing of their highest round draft pick to date, right-handed pitcher Robbie McClellan.
McClellan was a 12th round pick by the Kansas City Royals in 2003 out of Arizona State University. Pitching for the Arizona League Royals in 2003, he went 4-3 with two saves and a 4.00 ERA.
Striking out 51 batters in 45 innings, a ratio of 10.2 strikeouts per nine innings (second best in the Arizona League), he impressed the Royals brass and earned a late season promotion to the high-A Wilmington Blue Rocks where he did not allow a run in any of his appearances.
In 2004, he continued to dazzle hitters while pitching for Burlington (IA) as he once again averaged nearly a strikeout per inning pitched. For the Bees he struck out 60 batters in 64 innings over 19 appearances (four starts).
"A signing like this one works out well for both sides," said Beach Bums manager, Jeff Isom. "It allows us to get a very good pitcher to help our team performance on the field and it allows Robbie to show the scouts that he is the good pitcher that we know him to be, allowing him to move back up the ladder."
McClellan pitched two years for Arizona State in 2002 and 2003. In his senior season, the right-hander went 7-0 with a 3.70 ERA, striking out 57 batters in 58.1 innings. He earned honorable mention All Pac-10 honors in 2002 finishing fourth in the league and second on the Sun Devils with 91 strikeouts.
The Traverse City Beach Bums will kick off their inaugural season on May 24, 2006 with a game against the defending Frontier League champions, the Kalamazoo Kings. The team will play 48 games at brand new Wuerfel Park, named the "Best minor league ballpark in Michigan" by AAA Living magazine.
