Warthogs announce 2006 Hall of Fame class

Winston-Salem, NC - The Winston-Salem Warthogs announced Thursday that Winston-Salem baseball alums, Danny Sheaffer and Rick Ferrell, former Wake Forest head coach, Jack Stallings, and J.C. Martin will be inducted into the 2006 class of the Greater Winston-Salem Baseball Hall of Fame. The inductees will be honored Friday, January 20th at the Warthogs' 12th annual Hot Stove Banquet.

Rick Ferrell - hit .241 for Winston-Salem in 1925 before embarking on an 18-year Major League catching career with Boston, St. Louis (Browns) and the Washington Senators. The North Carolina farm boy hit .281 lifetime and better than 300 four times. Rick was an eight-time Major League All-Star and teamed with his brother Wes on the Red Sox and Senators from 1934-1938. Rick was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1984.

J.C. Martin - played in 908 games in his major league career that spanned 14 seasons. The Axton, VA native made his MLB debut in 1959 with the Chicago White Sox. Martin was traded to the New York Mets in 1967 and was part of the Mets World Championship team in 1969. J.C. played his final three seasons (1970-1972) with the Chicago Cubs. Martin has lived in the Winston-Salem area for the past ten years. Danny Sheaffer - was drafted out of Clemson University in the first round by the Boston Red Sox in 1981. Sheaffer was a 1983 Carolina League All-Star with Winston-Salem after hitting .276 with career high 15 home runs and 63 RBIs. Making his Major League debut with Boston in Milwaukee on April 9, 1987, Sheaffer had two hits including his first Major League home run. Danny played seven big league seasons and in 389 games with Boston, Cleveland, Colorado and St. Louis. Sheaffer makes his off-season home in Mt. Airy, NC and is manager for the AAA Memphis Redbirds in the St. Louis Cardinals organization.

Jack Stallings - In 39 seasons as a collegiate head coach, Stallings finished with an overall record of 1,257-799-10, which ranks 11th among all time Division I coaches. Guided Georgia Southern to one College World Series (1990), five NCAA postseason appearances (1979, 1980, 1987, 1990, 1996), four Trans America Athletic Conference championships (1980, 1985, 1986, 1987) and three Southern Conference titles (1993, 1996, 1997). In addition, Jack also served as head coach at Wake Forest and Florida State and worked the 1984 (hitting coach), 1988 (administrator) and 1992 (IBA representative) Olympic Games while conducting countless clinics all over the globe.
