Traverse City, MI, November 7, 2005: Chad Cooper of Melrose Park, Pa. (a suburb of Philadelphia), joins the Traverse City Beach Bums after spending the previous three seasons in the Frontier League with the Evansville Otters. The winner of the 2005 Frontier League Broadcaster of the Year award, Chad brings six years of professional sports broadcasting experience to Northern Michigan. He has worked for Nauticom Sports Network, WRFT and WBCB radio in the Philadelphia area and has served as a correspondent for the Associated Press covering college football, basketball and women's tennis and soccer. A 2003 graduate of Temple University in Philadelphia, he spent four years on the staff of the Temple Column where he was the Opinion Editor his junior year and Editor-in-Chief his senior year.
With over twenty highly qualified candidates applying for the coveted Broadcaster/Media Relations position, Beach Bum owners, John and Leslye Wuerfel were looking for someone not only with minor league baseball experience and a great radio voice, but someone who was passionate about baseball and who would be a good fit in the growing organization. In addition to his impressive resume, it was Cooper's great enthusiasm and easily apparent love of the game that most impressed the Wuerfel's.
Now, happily settled in his new office, one of Cooper's first assignments is to work out a broadcasting deal with a local radio station for the Beach Bums' inaugural season. Once a deal is finalized, the Beach Bums' be able to begin selling commercial spots to be aired during the 96-game regular season.
The Traverse City Beach Bums is an independent minor league baseball team. The Beach Bums are a member of the Frontier League, which consists of teams across the Midwest. The Traverse City Beach Bums will begin play at Wuerfel Park spring of 2006 and will play 48 home games at their brand new stadium in Blair Township.
