Hooks in first; Nolan Ryan Weekend
July 13, 2005 - Texas League (TL1)
Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
GO HOOKS! - Despite last night's 6-3 setback to Springfield, the Hooks continue to hold a share of first place in the Texas League's Western Division second-half race with a record of 12-7. That's also San Antonio's record after the Missions' 2-1 victory last night over Arkansas. There are 51 games remaining in the second half, and the Hooks and the Missions will play each other 14 times before the regular season ends. Be sure to mark on your calendar the four-game series with San Antonio July 24-27 at Whataburger Field...it should be a doozie!
Last night's loss snapped the Hooks' seven-game winning streak, the longest such streak for the club this season. During the streak, the Hooks outscored their opponents 33-11. When Springfield's Cody Haerther socked a two-run homer in the top of the fifth last night, that ended a string of 27 consecutive scoreless innings for Corpus Christi's pitching staff, also a new season high.
Speaking of home runs...how about the blast by Hooks' RF Charlton Jimerson in the bottom of the ninth last night? As Kevin Costner's character "Crash Davis" stated in the movie Bull Durham, "Anything that travels that far oughtta have a stewardess on it!" Jimerson's two-run shot carried over the scoreboard in left-center, and was conservatively estimated last night to have traveled 501 feet. It may have actually been hit farther, since the ball was spotted this morning on the train tracks outside the stadium's perimeter. The homer was Charlton's eighth this season, tying him with Dax Norris and Carlos Rodriguez for the team lead in that department.
LYONDELL CHALLENGE - Since we're on the topic of home runs...Jimerson's dinger means another $250 in donations toward the United Way of the Coastal Bend from the Lyondell Chemical Company in the Lyondell Challenge this month. Lyondell will donate at least that much for every homer swatted by the Hooks at Whataburger Field in July. The current count is six, which brings the dollar figure up to $1,500. Jimerson has hit four of those six home runs. Including tonight's game, there are 13 more home games remaining in the month of July.
MAJOR LEAGUERS TAKE THE FIELD - Houston Astros' catcher Humberto Quintero is playing for the Hooks this week, in Corpus Christi to continue his rehabilitation work after having an appendectomy back in June. He has started behind the plate in each of the last two games and is 1-for-7 with the bat. He has also picked a runner off first and in general has been solid on defense. Quintero will not start tonight, but will be available for pinch hitting duty. He is scheduled to start again on Thursday, when Astros' pitcher Wandy Rodriguez is slated to open the game for the Hooks.
Rodriguez, a lefty, is 4-4 this season in nine starts for Houston and has worked his way into the Astros' rotation after a good start to the year at AAA Round Rock, where he was 4-2 in eight starts. Rodriguez will be pitching for the Hooks to get in work missed during the All-Star break, and is scheduled to rejoin Houston after Thursday's outing.
NOLAN RYAN WEEKEND - The Arkansas Travelers invade Whataburger Field this weekend, and Saturday and Sunday the Hooks will have some great giveaways to honor the man who is the principal owner of the club and, oh yeah, is also in the Hall of Fame! To commemorate Nolan's induction into the Hall, the Hooks will give away Nolan Ryan Bobbleheads to the first 2,500 paying customers that come to the park on Saturday thanks to Wigington Rumley. On Sunday, the first 1,500 kids age 12 and under that make their way through the gates will get a Nolan Ryan Photo Ball courtesy of Reliant Energy. Pictures of both may be viewed on the club's home page at www.cchooks.com.
285,782 AND COUNTING - That's the raw season total for attendance at Whataburger Field so far this year. And that works out to an average of 7,144 fans per game, still third best in the Texas League and still third best among the 30 Double-A teams across the country. Should Hooks' fans continue to stream through the gates at this pace, the total attendance at the end of the regular season would be 500,118. Many thanks to those of you who have made it out to Whataburger Field to enjoy an evening with us!
MUSIC PLEASE - Hey, Whataburger Field isn't just for baseball. It's a great place for a summer party, and that's exactly what's on tap Friday, July 22nd when the Rock-N-Roll Summer Celebration takes place beginning at 6:30 that evening! Featured on stage will be Shirley Alton Reeves, the original lead singer of The Shirelles, and Charlie Thomas, the original lead singer with The Drifters, in addition to other âoldies' acts like the Rockin' Robin Band and Tommy Roe. Whataburger Field will be in full swing on July 22nd, with concessions' service and the Driscoll Children's Hospital Kids' Zone in high gear. The Summer Celebration will also feature a display of classic cars. Tickets for this night of Rock-N-Roll fun are $15 and may be purchased through the Hooks' Ticket Office by calling 361-561-HOOK.
