Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

Victor Hall's walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth plated the winning run for the Binghamton Mets, who defeated the Erie SeaWolves 9-8 at NYSEG Stadium Friday in the first game of a three-game series. The B-Mets have won three of their last four.

Erie (40-34) went on top in the first when Juan Francia, Scott Tousa and Juan Tejeda led off with hits against Yusmeiro Petit, the latter scoring Francia for the game's first run.

The B-Mets (35-35) would never trail after the second, when Jay Caligiuri led off with a single and came home ahead of Mike Jacobs' two-run homer for a 2-1 B-Mets lead.

In the third, Binghamton added three more with two out. After Jeff Duncan singled and Jacobs walked, Chase Lambin doubled to right, scoring Duncan. David Bacani followed with a two-run single to right, bringing home Jacobs and Lambin for a 5-1 lead. After a Byron Gettis home run for Erie in the top of the fourth, Wayne Lydon made it 6-2 Binghamton in the bottom of the inning, tripling to right-center to score Joe Hietpas, who led off with a single.

Erie got within 6-4 in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Tousa and a Don Kelly RBI groundout, but Binghamton would get those runs back in the bottom of the inning on back-to-back home runs by Caligiuri and Jacobs to lead off the inning for an 8-4 advantage. Jacobs had his third multi-homer game of the year, driving in three runs and scoring three times.

Twice down to their final strike, Erie rallied for four runs in the ninth. With two out and Don Kelly at first on a fielder's choice, Victor Mendez hit a two-strike single to center off Tim McNab and Max St. Pierre followed with a two-strike double to left, plating Kelly and Mendez and bringing the tying run to the plate. On came Anderson Garcia (1-0), who served up a two-run homer to Chris Maples, tying the game at eight.

Caligiuri led off the bottom of the ninth for Binghamton with a single to right off reliever Mike Bumatay (0-3). After Jacobs struck out, Lambin hit a ground ball that the shortstop Tousa had trouble getting out of his glove for an error, putting men on first and second. Bacani then singled to left to load the bases for Hall, who lined a base hit over the head of the drawn-in centerfielder Mendez, scoring Caligiuri for the win.

Saturday, the B-Mets play the second game of their three-game series with Erie. Orlando Roman (3-2, 4.63) will start for Binghamton against Humberto Sanchez (1-1, 5.30) of Erie. Game time is 7:00 at NYSEG Stadium, with the Horizon's Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show kicking off the radio broadcast at 6:45 on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
