RAPIDS NOTES:
INDUCTING THE GREAT ONE: Former Colorado Rapids defender and now Soccer Ambassador Marcelo Balboa was presented on Tuesday, April 19th as one of three 2005 National Hall of Fame inductees in a press conference held in Denver, Colorado. The former U.S. National Team standout will be officially inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame on August 26th at the NSHF in Oneonta, New York.
THE RAPIDS' ELEVEN HOME GAME UNDEFEATED STREAK: With their 0-0 draw against FC Dallas on Saturday's 2005 Home Opener at INVESCO Field, the Rapids have extended the team's undefeated streak at the Mile High pitch to 11 games. The Black and Blue have established a 5-0-6 record in the streak, outscoring their opponents 12-5. The Rapids' last loss at INVESCO Field took place more then 300 days ago, with a 1-0 loss against the Kansas City Wizards on Wednesday, June 9, 2004.
ROCKY MOUNTAIN TRADE: The Colorado Rapids traded on Wednesday, April 20st the rights to midfielder Seth Trembly to Real Salt Lake in exchange for a 2006 natural fourth round supplemental draft pick. Trembly will join Jordan Cila as two former Rapids now playing in Utah. Cila has only seen seven minutes of action during Real's first three MLS regular season games. Trembly, the Colorado native was waived by the Rapids on March 3, 2005.
HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER SATURDAY AT INVESCO FIELD AT MILE HIGH: Arguably the biggest rivalry in Littleton's Girls Varsity soccer will come to INVESCO Field at Mile High this Saturday, April 23rd at 3:45 p.m. (MT) when Heritage High School takes on Arapahoe High School prior to the Rapids' home game against the Columbus Crew. The two sides, who have participated in some of the great chapters of girls HS soccer in the state, will this time square off on the turf of the mighty mile high pitch.
RAPIDS RESERVE TEAM KICKS OFF '05 WITH 2-2 TIE: The Rapids Reserve team opened the 2005 Reserve league tournament with an exciting 2-2- tie against Real Salt Lake. Two goals from forward Sasha Gotsmanov, the Belarus native and 2005 MLS Supplemental draftee were enough to get the Black and Blue Reserves their first point in their history. The Rapids Reserve team will take on the Columbus Crew Reserves this weekend in Colorado, as they too look for their first victory of the year.
THE INSIDE STORY: Assistant coach John Murphy will be able to get more then his usual scouting report to the Rapids Coaching staff for the Rapids game against the Columbus Crew. Murphy spent last season with the Crew as the Assistant Coach and Goalkeeper Coach. During his time with the Crew, Murphy helped lead the team to an 18-game unbeaten streak, setting an MLS record under the helm of Head Coach Greg Andrulis. The Crew finished that season with a 12-5-13 record and their first-ever Eastern Conference regular season title.
MIDWEEK SCRIMMAGE: The Colorado Rapids held a midweek scrimmage at the team's training facility in Westminster, tying Denver University's soccer team 0-0. A total of 14 substitutions were made in the game, including the entire 11 players from the first half coming out for the second one.
ALL TIME vs. CREW: The Colorado Rapids hold a 12-4-5 all time record against the Crew, having outscored Columbus 35 goals to 27, keeping 41 out of the 63 points in dispute. The Black and Blue are 2-0-2 against the Crew when hosting them in the thin air at INVESCO Field.
FOR THE SAKE OF THE NOTES: The Colorado Rapids locker room at Rice-Eccles Stadium showed the following legend at a well placed sign at its entrance: Rice-Eccles Stadium, Altitude 4,657 ft., Oxygen Available upon Request. Real Salt Lake officials might just have forgotten that they were playing the Rapids, who are based at 5,280 ft. above sea level.
SIGNING FOR THE WEEKEND: The Rapids signed three players to the team's developmental roster for a weekend so that they could play in the Reserve League game against Real Salt Lake last Saturday. Midfielders Jared Chandler, Jeffrey Krause and Marcus Sagastume all played 90 minutes in the team's 2-2 tie at Rice-Eccles Stadium. The three of them are still on the Rapids radar to come back for this weekend's reserve match against the Columbus Crew reserves.
