ABA Detroit team under new ownership, management

January 4, 2005 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Detroit Panthers News Release

Indianapolis, IN. Joe Newman, ABA CEO, today announced that the Detroit entry into the professional basketball league has both new ownership and management and will again begin playing its schedule this week. Newman stated, "We're fortunate to have two very strong individuals at the helm there and are confident that they'll put together a first-class operation and team. Detroit is an important part of the league and we are pleased that we can move forward there."

The team will be co-owned by Antoine Joubert, a Detroit businessman and 1987 All-American basketball player at the University of Michigan and Chris Dryer, a Detroit-based real estate developer and attorney. According to Joubert, "Detroit has been an integral part of the ABA since it was re-established in 2000. We felt very strongly that the city should be represented in the league - and that it deserves a high-quality organization. Chris and I are working hard to do just that and appreciate the ABA's willingness to work with us. We have a lot of catching up to do, a lot of games to play - but I think people will be very pleasantly surprised. We're practicing and we should be ready to go this weekend."

Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
