New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Norwich, CT -On the night Willie Mays appeared at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, another newcomer dazzled for the Navigators in their 4-0 win over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats in front of 4,137 fans Saturday night. Making his Eastern League debut, left-hander Brian Mazone stymied the Fisher Cats for eight shutout innings en route to the win.
Mazone (1-0) allowed only three singles while striking out eight before giving way to reliever Luke Anderson, who retired the side in order to close out the win for Norwich (60-53).
Mike Cervenak (2-for-4, 2 RBI) delivered two run-scoring singles against losing pitcher Brandon League (4-4). Cervernak's first-inning single scored Jay Pecci to stake the Navigators to a 1-0 lead, and his fifth-inning single plated Jake Wald to make it 2-0. That was all League would allow in five innings. He struck out a season-high eight batters, while issuing seven hits and two walks.
Left-hander Derek Lee (0 IP, 2 R) left the game with an apparent injury in the sixth inning after giving up hits to the only three batters he faced, capped by Wald's run-scoring double. Right-hander Jordy Templet followed with his New Hampshire debut, yielding a bloop RBI single to Pecci that scored inherited runner Julian Benavidez but then settling down to allow only one other hit and no runs in three innings of work.
Maikel Jova went 1-for-3 to extend his team-record hitting streak to 15 games.
The loss drops New Hampshire (65-49) two games behind front-running Binghamton in the Eastern League's Northern Division standings. The Fisher Cats' lead over the Navigators for second place was trimmed to 4.5 games, with one game remaining in the four-game series.
New Hampshire sends right-hander Francisco Rosario (0-3, 5.91) to the mound against left-hander Pat Misch (5-4, 2.99) in a 5:05pm game Sunday afternoon. Coverage begins at 4:45pm on the WKXL Fisher Cats Radio Network, available on-line at www.fishercatsradio.com.
