Sevierville, TN - The Tennessee Smokies beat the Jacksonville Suns 5-3 at Smokies' Park on Saturday to clinch the Southern League Eastern Division First-Half Championship. The victory propels Tennessee into the Southern League Playoffs in September.
Papo Bolivar had an RBI and scored two runs on the night, while Javier Colina drove in two with a single in the third inning. Dee Haynes had the first RBI of the night with his single in the first to put the Smokies' on top 1-0.
Smokies' starter, Luis Martinez (6-6), evened his record with the victory. He pitched seven strong innings, allowing three runs on five hits, and striking out eight for the evening. Carmen Cali pitched the ninth for his eighth save, including a strikeout to clinch the title.
Jacksonville starter, Eric Hull, struggled through three plus innings, allowing six hits and all five earned runs. Edwin Bellorin had 2 RBI's on a single off the wall in the third inning for the Suns.
The four-game series and first half of the season will conclude on Jimmy Buffet Tribute Night, Sunday at 5:00 p.m. Jeremy Cook (2-1, 3.60) will take the mound against the Suns' Ryan Ketchner (3-2, 2.13). Fans wearing Hawaiian shirts will receive a discount on tickets.
