Burlington Bees News Release

Clinton, IA - For the second game in a row, the Burlington Bees (17-40) battled from behind to tie the score in the late innings, only to have the Clinton LumberKings (29-26) answer to pull out the win. Today, the Bees scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to tie the game at four, but the LumberKings scored on an error by Brandon Powell in the bottom of the ninth inning for a 5-4 win at Alliant Energy Field. The LumberKings lead the series 2-0 and the season series 5-1.

The LumberKings scored the first run in the bottom of the third inning. They loaded the bases with no outs against Bees' starter Ambiorix Burgos who threw a wild pitch that scored Kevin Richardson to make it 1-0. After another walk reloaded the bases, Burgos struck out the next three batters to get out of the jam without any more runs coming in.

In the top of the sixth inning, Powell drew a walk and Mitch Maier singled to knock out starter John Danks. Kevin Altman took over and the LumberKings got a force at third for the first out as Kenard Springer bunted in fronted in front of home plate. Luis Gonzalez picked him up with a single to left that drove in Maier and advanced to second on a throw toward third as Springer advanced two bases. With the infield in, Mike Gaffney grounded out to second, but after an intention walk to Bryan Graham, Brian McFall hit a broken bat dribbler past the mound and beat the play to first for an infield hit and an RBI to give the Bees a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, the LumberKings took the lead back against reliever Steve Bray who had taken over for Burgos in the fifth inning. Burgos struck out seven in 4.2 innings and allowed one runs on two hits. Bray walked Andrew Wishy to start the inning and Richardson blooped a ball over first for a hit. After Justin Hatcher came in to run for Richardson, Emerson Frostad showed bunt, but pulled the bat back and slapped a single to left to drive in Wishy and tie the game at two. Adam Bourassa then bunted to move the runners over and ended up with his second hit bunt hit as it died in the grass up the third base line. Micah Furtado followed with a double to the wall in center that scored two, but a perfect relay throw cut down Bourassa at the plate for the first out. After a strikeout and a walk, Dane Bubela singled to right and McFall threw out Kreuzer trying to go from first to third just before Furtado crossed the plate to end the inning with the LumberKings holding a 4-2 lead.

The Bees loaded the bases in the top of the eighth, but did not score as Cesar Herrera struck out pinch-hitter Chris Lubanski to end the inning, but in the top of the ninth, Herrera couldn't close the door. Walter Sevilla led off with a single, Powell walked, and Maier singled to load the bases with nobody out. Springer drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to left-center and after Gonzalez popped out, Herrera walked Kila Kaaihue and Graham on four pitches each to force in the tying run before getting McFall to pop out to end the inning.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Dusty Dossett took over in the ninth and retired the first man before Bourassa and Furtado singled to bring up Abigail Sandoval who had taken over for Ian Kinsler in the sixth. Sandoval hit a hard one-hopper that ate up Powell and went through his legs for an error as Bourassa raced in with the winning run. Dossett (2-3) suffered the loss and Herrera (4-3) got his second in this series even though he blew the save opportunity.

The Bees and LumberKings continue this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Alliant Energy Field. RH Greg Atencio (2-6, 4.82) will start for the Bees against RH Edison Volquez (1-2, 4.35) for the LumberKings. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
