March 15, 2004 - Frontier League (FL)
Gateway Grizzlies News Release
The Grizzlies announced Monday that the contract of right-handed pitcher and single-season strikeout leader Scott Patterson has been purchased by the Seattle Mariners organization. Patterson becomes the 15th Grizzlies player to have his contract purchased by a Major League organization. The Oakdale, PA native is the eighth member of the Grizzlies 2003 Championship team to move into affiliated baseball.
Patterson had recently signed and would have been in his third season with the Grizzlies, after joining the team mid-way through the 2002 campaign. Patterson finished the 2003 season with an 8-3 record and a 2.92 earned run average, which was tops by a starter. He began the season 6-0 before losing for the first time. He also recorded seven and one-third shutout innings in his only playoff appearance last season, striking out 10 hitters in the outing. Patterson finished 2003 with a team record 120 strikeouts, which was good for third in the league. He tied Adam Jahnsen with a team-record two shutouts in 2003. Patterson holds the Grizzlies career record with three. He also holds the Grizzlies career record for lowest ERA, with a 3.03 mark over his career.
Patterson has not been assigned to a team within the organization yet. Should the Mariners release Patterson during spring training or the regular season, his contract rights will be returned to the Grizzlies.
The Grizzlies will begin their fourth Frontier League season, and defense of their 2003 league championship Friday May 21, on the road at River City. The Grizzlies open their home season May 28 when the Rockford RiverHawks come to town.
Season tickets and mini-plans are currently on sale and are available by calling the Grizzlies at 618-337-3000 or visiting the GMC Stadium box office.
