River City Rascals News Release
The River City Rascals are pleased to announce that former longtime St. Louis Cardinals General Manager Bing Devine and co-author Tom Wheatley will appear at T.R. Hughes Ballpark on May 21st and July 14th to sign copies of Devine's autobiography: The Memoirs of Bing Devine: Stealing Lou Brock and Other Brilliant Moves by a Master G.M. The pair will be there to greet fans and to sign the book, which will be available for purchase at the ballpark on those two nights.
Devine served as the Cards' General Manager twice, from 1958-64 and from 1967-78. He was also the President and General Manager of the New York Mets and has worked for the San Francisco Giants, Montreal Expos, and Houston Astros. In addition to his numerous years in baseball, Devine was the President of the St. Louis Football Cardinals from 1981-86 and was the charter Vice-President of the St. Louis Sports Commission. He was born and raised in St. Louis, where he graduated from University City High School and Washington University.
"Bing Devine is a living legend and a generational link between baseball's past and modern era. To have the honor of hosting him for opening night and the All-Star Game is something that we are very excited about," said Rascals Broadcaster Phil Giubileo, who coordinated the appearances.
Devine continues to work for the Cardinals as a special assignment scout. He is best known for orchestrating the trade that brought Hall-of-Famer Lou Brock to St. Louis in exchange for Erinie Broglio.
Wheatley has written sports for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch since 1984 and is a four-time Missouri Sportswriter of the Year. He is the author of St. Louis Sports Folks and co-author of several books including Bob Plager's Tales from the Blues Bench and Bob Forsch's Tales from the Cardinals Dugout.
The 2004 River City Rascals opening night is on Friday May 21st, as the Rascals will host Gateway at 7:05 in the SONIC Crosstown Clash. Season ticket packages are now on sale at the Rascals ticket office or by calling 636-240-BATS. Full-season, half-season, 10-game mini plans and general admission ticket books are available.
