Bandits Sign Gurtler as Play-by-Play Announcer

Buffalo, N.Y. (January 2, 2003) -- The Buffalo Bandits announced today that John Gurtler has been hired as the play-by-play announcer for the 2004 season, while Randy Mearns will add color commentary during home games.

"We're really excited to have someone of John's experience and expertise to handle the play-by-play for the Bandits for the 2004 season," said Bandits General Manager Kurt Silcott. "In our effort to bring the highest quality broadcast to our fans, we've found what we believe is the best person for this position. John's vast experience in radio and covering sporting events will make our radio broadcast, both at home and on the road, one of the best in the league."

A Denver native, Gurtler has been involved in the communications and entertainment industry for the last 30 years, including 18 in Western New York and 11 years as play-by-play announcer for the Buffalo Sabres. Gurtler has also spent time as the voice of the Rochester Americans, a television host and has served the last 8 seasons as the stadium play-by-play voice for the Buffalo Bills.

Gurtler and Mearns can be heard this weekend on WJJL-AM 1440 when the Bandits open the 2004 season against the Rochester Knighthawks in the HSBC Arena on Saturday, January 3 at 7:30 PM. The broadcast will be tapped delayed and broadcast at 10:00 PM following the Niagara University basketball game.
