Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
The Reno Aces outlasted the Colorado Springs Sky Sox on Saturday evening at Security Service Field as they downed the Sox 6-5 in front of 5,845 fans.
The two teams battled back and forth in the middle innings and worked to a five-all tie by the end of the sixth. Jonathan Herrera, Matt Miller and Matt Murton all hit homers for the Sox and Eric Young Jr. contributed an RBI triple but it ended up not being enough. Chris Young finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and catcher John Hester drove in two for the Aces.
In the seventh, Cole Gillespie led off the inning with a single off reliever Ryan Speier and two outs later moved to second on an errant throw by third baseman Christian Colonel who was attempting to double-off Gillespie after snaring a line drive off the bat of Ed Rogers. Instead of recording the final out of the inning, the error put Gillespie in scoring position for Agustin Murillo who drove promptly drove him in for the deciding run.
Tony Barnette (12-7) picked up his 12th win of the season for the Aces as he worked seven innings and gave up five runs on six hits. The win ties him with J.R. Mathes of the Iowa Cubs for the most wins in the PCL this season. Speier (1-1) took the loss in relief of Esmil Rogers after giving up an unearned run over two innings of work. Doug Slaten notched his seventh save by working a scoreless ninth.
Game two tomorrow night will feature RH Jhoulys Chacin (1-0, 0.00) for the Sox versus RH Daniel Cabrera (0-1, 54.00). Game time is set for 1:05 PM.
GAME NOTES: With the Sky Sox' loss and a win by Tacoma, the magic number for Colorado Springs remains at 10.
