Lake Monsters Open Road Trip with a Win

JAMESTOWN, NY ---The Vermont Lake Monsters opened a six-game roadtrip with their fifth straight road victory as they defeated the Jamestown Jammers 5-2 in New York-Penn League action Tuesday night at Diethrick Park.

Four of the first five Lake Monster batters of the game singled as Vermont scored three runs in the top of the first inning. Jeff Kobernus led off the game with an infield single, stole second and scored on a Sean Nicol RBI single. Adam Amar added an RBI single and later scored on a J.R. Higley sacrifice fly.

The Lake Monsters added another run in the second as Kobernus was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a Nicol single, went to third on a fielding error and scored on a Amar sacrifice fly for a 4-0 Vermont lead.

Jamestown got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning on a Jose Torres RBI double and added another run in the sixth on a Rand Smith RBI infield single to cut the Vermont lead to 4-2.

Vermont starter Juan Jaime (1-1) allowed one run on three hits with two walks and five strikeouts over five innings for his first win of the season. Four other Lake Monster pitchers tossed an inning, including Clayton Dill with a scoreless ninth inning for his third save.

Nicol went 2-for-5 with singles in each of his first two at bats and is now hitting .352 (25-for-71) on the season. Justin Bloxom also had to hits for the Lake Monsters, while Kobernus scored two runs. Torres and Nate Simon both had two hits for Jamestown (9-16).

The win moved Vermont (13-11) two games over the .500 mark for the second time this season. The Lake Monsters will look to move three games over .500 for the first time on Wednesday when they play the second of the three-game series at Jamestown with Pat Lehman scheduled to start for Vermont.
