'Birds Blank Spinners

(LOWELL, MA) The IronBirds got their short three game set off to a positive start as they shutout the Lowell Spinners, 5-0.

Aberdeen put the pressure on Lowell early as they saw the ball off of starter Ryan Pressly's hand with great accuracy. T.J. Baxter got it going with a leadoff infield single, Ty Kelly walked behind him and Levi Carolus laced a single of his own to load the bags with no one out. Tyler Townsed lifted a fly ball to dead center to plate Baxter from third to give the ‘Birds a one-run lead. Richard D'Oleo got aboard on a fielder's choice as Kelly was hung up between third and home to put runners on first and second with one away. Tom Edwards ripped a line-drive base hit up the middle to score Carolus and Justin Dalles followed suit and singled D'Oleo home to make it 3-0, Aberdeen. Garabez Rosa kept the hot hitting alive as he knocked a base hit to left field but Edwards was thrown out at the plate to end the rally.

With a sizeable lead, southpaw starter Tyler Sexton had room to breathe. The big lefty proceeded to fool his opposition for six frames, giving up just two singles, walking two, and striking out five to keep the Spinners scoreless.

Aberdeen got a little insurance in the top of the sixth as the IronBirds took advantage of Lowell's miscues. Dalles led off with a double to left and Jason Rook reached on a one-out strikeout. The ball caromed away from Lowell catcher Christian Vazquez and Dalles crossed home on a bad throw to first. Rook swiped second and later scored on a Baxter infield single. The throw to first skipped out of Chris McGuiness' mitt to plate the second run on another error. Through five and half, the ‘Birds were in control, 5-0.

Jake Smith took over for Sexton and side-stepped Lowell's best chance at scoring. With two on and one out, Smith found a way out of trouble as he threw two scoreless frames to keep the shutout intact.

Scott Mueller was the final piece for the IronBirds. A 1-2-3 ninth ended the game and Aberdeen closed the glove on a three-hit shutout.

Sexton (2-2) was credited with the win as Pressly (3-1) took the defeat.

Baxter, Carolus, Dalles, and Rook all finished with two base hits. Red Sox rehabber Jed Lowrie took an 0-for-4 day at the plate in the lop-sided loss.
