
Zimmerman Leads Roadrunners Past 'Wings

EDINBURG, Texas - Ryan Zimmerman tossed seven strong innings leading the Edinburg Roadrunners past the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings 3-1 Thursday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
Zimmerman (5-3) picked up the win after allowing just one run while scattering six hits and striking out six.
The Roadrunners (37-37) got a pair of runs in the bottom of the first with some help from the WhiteWings (34-40) defense. With runners at first and second, a pick-off throw from the catcher sailed into right field allowing Travis Clark to come in and score. Later in the inning, another throwing error from the catcher on a dropped third strike allowed Trevor White to score making it 2-0 Edinburg.
The score remained the same until the top of the sixth inning when Hiroki Itakura hit an RBI single allowing Buddy Elmore to come and score cutting Edinburg's lead 2-1.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Roadrunners answered back with a run of their own. Tim Battle lined a one-out triple to left center and then came into score on Jordan Etier's sacrifice fly extending Edinburg's lead 3-1.
Brian Smith (0-2) gave the 'Wings six solid innings allowing three runs, one earned, and striking out eight but took the loss.
Ryan Turner pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth inning giving Edinburg the 3-1 victory. It was his first save of the season.
The Roadrunners and WhiteWings will play the third game of their four-game series Friday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
