Iowa Cubs News Release
The Iowa Cubs were shutout by the New Orleans Zephyrs 3-0 Saturday night at Principal Park. The Cubs and Zephyrs combined for just seven hits. Rick VandenHurk (5-1) came out ahead, earning the win, in the pitchers duel. James Russell (3-2) was tagged with the loss, walking five batters, striking out three and allowing one run.
The game was scoreless until the third inning when Rick VandenHurk reached base on a fielder's choice. Iowa's Russell then allowed back-to-back walks to David Matranga and Brett Carroll. With the bases loaded John Lindsey walked to bring home a run and take 1-0 New Orleans lead.
The Zephyrs tallied two more runs in the ninth inning when Matranga and Lindsey hit sacrifice flies for the 3-0 final.
Brad Snyder singled in the second inning and John-Ford Griffin collected another hit for Iowa, a single in the bottom of the eighth. Iowa threatened in the ninth inning when Snyder walked and Chris Robinson singled to put runners on first and second. However, two consecutive strikeouts earned Luis Ayala his third save for the Zephrys.
The Cubs and Zephyrs play a doubleheader Sunday at Principal Park. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. for the first seven-inning game.
