New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

DES MOINES, Iowa - The first game of the series was a classic pitcher's duel between the Zephyrs and Iowa Cubs, a scoreless game through eight innings. In the ninth inning Iowa picked up a couple of hits and New Orleans loaded the bases with an intentional walk. Josh Vitters hit a sharp grounder to Matt Dominguez and the Z's got the force at the plate for the first out. Veteran Alfredo Amezaga stepped in and on a 0-1 pitch, Z's reliever Rob Delaney threw a wild pitch and Anthony Rizzo sprinted home for the game winning run. Zephyr Jake Jefferies retrieved the ball in a hurry and had a play, but the throw was high and the Cubs grab the first game of the series. New Orleans had a golden opportunity to score in the eighth inning with runners at second and third and out. A missed sign on a potential squeeze play ran Jeffries into a caught stealing between home and the third and the Zephyr offense got shutout. Z's starter Wade LeBlanc worked seven innings allowing no runs on four hits.
