Yuma Scorpions' Catcher Jason Dewey Acquired by Seattle
January 25, 2006 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Yuma Scorpions News Release
(Pleasanton, CA. January 25, 2006) The Golden Baseball League has announced that the contract of Yuma Scorpions Catcher Jason Dewey has been sold to the Seattle Mariners. He will report to spring training with the Mariners in Peoria, Arizona and is slated for a Double-A or Triple-A assignment.
"It's good to see Jason receive this opportunity as he really deserves it," said Yuma Scorpions Manager Benny Castillo. "Jason was a leader for us with his bat and glove, but also in the clubhouse setting an example for our younger players on how to be a professional in this game. We will miss him and hope to see him at Safeco Field in the future."
Dewey was originally drafted in 1996 in the 26th round by the then-named California Angels out of Indian River Community College in Florida. He quickly rose to Double-A Erie through the Angels system after spectacular years hitting .324 with Boise in the Northwest League and .322 with power for the Lake Elsinore Storm in the California League. The Angels then packaged him with Norm Hutchins (OF) and traded him to the Colorado Rockies for major league outfielder Edgard Clemente and a player to be named later in March of 2000. He flourished with the Rockies, reaching as high as Triple-A Colorado Springs in the Pacific Coast League before being plucked away by the Texas Rangers in the 2002 Rule V Minor League Draft. He was the catcher for the Ranger's Double-A team in Frisco, Texas in 2003 before being released. After one season in the independent Atlantic League failed to get him back in a major league farm system, he joined the Yuma Scorpions of the Golden Baseball League for their inaugural season in 2005 where he was among the league leaders in home runs, RBIs, runs, and doubles. Dewey had become so enamored with the City of Yuma and the lifestyle that he had settled there and had launched a successful mortgage broker business for off-season employment at the conclusion of the 2005 campaign.
The 2006 season for the Yuma Scorpions opens at home on June 1st versus the defending champion San Diego Surf Dawgs. Tickets, merchandise, and sponsor opportunities are all still available at www.yumascorpions.com.
