Chico Outlaws News Release

YUMA, AZ - Unlike the first two games of their season-opening series, the Yuma Scorpions didn't need to employ a late inning rally Saturday night against the Chico Outlaws - the Scorpions scored early and often and cruised to their third straight win, a 10-5 victory over the defending Golden Baseball League champs at Desert Sun Stadium.

The Scorpions drew first blood in the bottom of the 2nd when Jeremy Cleveland took a Jason Roach pitch over the left field wall to give Yuma a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning Hector Bernal doubled home Jose Rodriguez and scored on a Ryan Barba single to put the Scorpions up 3-0. Chico drew to within a run, scoring once in the 3rd when Todd Gossage singled home Steve Boggs and another in the 4th when Yuma starter Mike Esposito's wild pitch allowed Casey Garrison to score from third and make it a 3-2 game. But that was as close as the Outlaws would get - in the bottom of the 4th Yuma would bat around, scoring five times off Roach...Henry Calderon providing the big blow with a two-out, three-run homer. Maikel Jova tripled home Rich Janeway and came home of Cleveland's line single to center to make the score 8-2.

The Scorpions went up 10-2 with a pair of runs in the 5th off Outlaws reliever Tyler Pearson, and then left it to reliever Jack Jensen to close things out. Shane Cronin led off the Chico 7th with a solo homer to left...and in the 9th an RBI groundout by Eric Pringle and a run-scoring single by Boggs trimmed Yuma's lead to five. But it was far too little and far too late, as Jensen struck out Kevin McCarthy to end it and give the Scorpions the 10-5 victory.

Esposito (1-0) went five innings to pick up the win for Yuma, with Jensen tossing four innings to earn his first save of the year...Roach (0-1) lasted just four innings in taking the loss for Chico. The Outlaws had eight hits on the night; Garrison leading the way with a 3-for-3 performance...Cronin went 2-for-4. The Scorpions pounded out 13 hits...Calderon was 3-for-5 while Jova, Cleveland and Barba chipped in with two hits apiece. Saturday's loss dropped Chico to 0-3 on the season, while Yuma improved to 3-0 and claim a share of the GBL South Division lead.

The Outlaws look to salvage the finale of the four-game set when they send rookie right-hander Berek Fasking to the mound Sunday...the Scorpions will counter with righty Evan White. The game will be played at Alexander Field in Blythe, California, and you can hear all the action with Rory Miller calling the play-by-play beginning at 6:35pm on ESPN Radio 101.7 FM and 1340 AM, or on-line at www.ChicoOutlawsBaseball.com.
