Bridgeport Bluefish News Release

(York, PA) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (5-8) were defeated by the York Revolution (8-6) 4-3 in seven innings at PeoplesBank Park on Wednesday afternoon in the opener of a day/night doubleheader. York has now taken the first three of the four game series as Bridgeport looks to salvage the finale of the road trip in the nightcap.

Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Jimmy Patterson (0-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing two runs on two hits in three innings of work, walking three, striking out three, and surrendering one home run. York Starting Pitcher Jorge Martinez (1-1) earned the win, tossing five innings, giving up one run on six hits and striking out three. Mike DeMark allowed two unearned runs in the top half of the seventh inning to register his league leading fifth save of the season.

After a rain delay of one hour and two minutes came to a close, York went to work against Patterson in the home half of the third inning. Salvador Paniagua launched a solo home run to left center field to begin the frame, giving the Revolution the early 1-0 advantage. Michael Rockett followed with a walk, and would come around to score the second run of the inning on an RBI double by Josh Wilson, and just like that the home team had a 2-0 edge. Bridgeport would cut the deficit to a single run at 2-1 off Martinez in the top of the fifth inning on a run scoring single by Ruben Sosa Jr., plating Carlos Sosa who led off with a base knock of his own. Sosa Jr. would then steal his team leading sixth base of the season, but was stranded at second when Martinez struck out Luis Nunez to keep the Revolution out in front.

York would add a pair of giant sized insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth off Joseph Kuzia. The right hander had retired the first seven batters he had faced, but three consecutive hits, culminated by a two run double off the bat of former Bluefish James Simmons gave the Revolution what seemed to be a comfortable three run lead at the time at 4-1 with Bridgeport down to their final three outs. Continuing to show how much heart this Bluefish team has early on in 2016, Bridgeport would not go down without a fight against DeMark in the top of the seventh. With the 'Fish down to their final out of the afternoon, Yefry Castillo reached on an infield single. Luis Hernandez hit a slow ground ball to the right side that was thrown away by the second baseman Rockett, moving Castillo all the way to third and Hernandez to second. Sosa Jr. followed with a two run single, and Simmons airmailed the cutoff man allowing Sosa Jr. to move into scoring position representing the tying run. For the second time in as many plate appearances, Nunez struck out with a chance to tie the game up with a base hit to the outfield, and DeMark was able to breathe a sigh of relief as York hung on by the skin of their teeth and came away with a one run victory. Bridgeport returns home following their brief four game road trip on Friday, May 6th when they welcome in their cross sound rivals the Long Island Ducks to the Ballpark at Harbor yard to kick of the 2016 edition of the Ferry Cup Series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:12 P.M. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive a 2016 Bridgeport Bluefish team photo, presented by OSG.
