York Revolution News Release
Sugar Land, TX- In a fashion hauntingly familiar from the night before, the York Revolution were edged by the Sugar Land Skeeters, 10-9 in Game Two of the Freedom Division Championship Series on Wednesday night at Constellation Field. The Revs return home for the remainder of the series, beginning with a must-win Game Three on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. at PeoplesBank Park.
The carbon copy elements from the previous night included a game that featured three lead changes, with Sugar Land going in front in the late innings. Wednesday's defeat featured a stunning seven-run comeback, however, as a huge early lead for the Revs evaporated.
York built a 7-0 lead through the first four innings, appearing to be on its way to evening the series. The Revs struck for the first two runs on a Kevin Rivers single to right with two outs in the first, cashing in against Sugar Land lefty Aaron Thompson who walked the bases loaded.
The Revs mounted a two-out threat in the second when Travis Witherspoon reached on a pop up that was lost in the twilight by the Sugar Land infield, before walks to Jared Mitchell and Isaias Tejeda filled the bags. After a mound visit, Andres Perez jumped on the first pitch and hammered a grand slam to left field, the first in Revolution playoff history, as the lead grew to 6-0.
Perez added a two-out RBI single to left field in the fourth to give York a commanding 7-0 advantage.
Revs righty Micah Owings was dominant early, retiring 10 of his first 11 batters. Owings survived his first challenge in the fourth, retiring Lance Zawadzki on an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play with the bases loaded.
With Owings dealing, Sugar Land's comeback seemingly came out of nowhere in the fifth. Wilfredo Rodriguez and Jeff Dominguez started things with base hits on two-strike counts. With one out, Josh Prince, put Sugar Land on the board with a two-run double down the third base line. After taking third on a wild pitch, Prince came home on a sac fly to left by Rene Tosoni, as Sugar Land pulled within 7-3. It appeared the Revs would escape with no further damage, but a Jeremy Barfield ground ball to third took an in-between hop on Bryan Pounds, resulting in an error. Travis Scott followed with an RBI double down the first base line on a play that the Revs contested was foul. After an intentional walk to Delwyn Young, lefty reliever Nate Reed entered and induced a ground ball from Zawadzki, but a bad hop at third resulted in a run-scoring error cutting it to 7-5. Rodriguez wiped away the Revs' once-sizeable lead with a two-run double down the right field line to tie the game, and Dominguez gave Sugar Land an 8-7 lead on a broken bat bloop single to center.
Pounds provided the Revs with a huge lift in the top of the seventh, launching a dramatic go-ahead two-run homer to left-center, catapulting the Revs back ahead with a 9-8 lead.
York righty Ricardo Gomez handled a perfect seventh, but was greeted with a leadoff single by Juan Martinez in the bottom of the eighth. After a strikeout, Tosoni undid Pounds' potential heroics, connecting on a two-run homer to right field, putting Sugar Land in front in their last at-bat.
Derrick Loop nailed down his second save of the series but not without controversy. After a leadoff single by Joel Guzman, Loop recorded a pop up and induced a potential game-ending double play ball. Pinch-runner Brandon Chaves' slide forced an errant turn by second baseman Delwyn Young. A long delay ensued as umpires utilized replay to review Chaves' slide. After it was determined that there was no interference, Loop retired Pounds on a fly ball to deep right, securing the 2-0 series lead for Sugar Land.
Notes: Perez' five RBI finished one shy of a Revs playoff game record. Witherspoon scored three times, tying a club record for a postseason game. The eight-run fifth inning was the largest by an opponent in Revs postseason history. The previous largest lead surrendered by the Revs in a playoff defeat was three runs twice, most recently in a 2014 elimination loss to Sugar Land. The Revs fall to 2-5 all-time in postseason play against the Skeeters, having dropped four straight dating to 2014. York scored seven runs with two outs, while Sugar Land plated five two-out scores. For the series, York has scored 11 of 14 runs with two outs, while Sugar Land has tallied 10 of 17 runs in two-out situations. York lefty Frank Gailey (6-5, 3.13) faces Sugar Land right-hander Brett Marshall (6-6, 4.33) in Game Three on Friday at 6:30 p.m. in front of a potential record crowd at PeoplesBank Park. Fans can catch the action on SportsRadio 1350, woyk1350.com, and on the WOYK mobile app beginning at 6 p.m. with Darrell Henry and Will DeBoer on the call.
