
Yolanda Griffith Named Starter for 2006 WNBA All-Star Game

SACRAMENTO, CALIF., July 5, 2006 - The Sacramento Monarchs today announce that former WNBA MVP and 2005 WNBA Finals MVP Yolanda Griffith was named as a starter for the 2006 WNBA All-Star Game, to be played on Wednesday, July 12, at Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York. Griffith, who will represent the Western Conference, will make her third appearance as a starter; she was also honored as a starter for the 2001 and 2005 All-Star Games. This game will mark Griffith's sixth All-Star selection and the WNBA's seventh All-Star Game.
Griffith currently leads the Monarchs in points per game averaging 12.2 points. She is also averaging 6.5 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.0 steals and .5 blocks per game. In addition, this season Griffith amassed additional career milestones, surpassing 7,000 minutes and the 3,500 point plateau.

Fans determined the starters for the 2006 WNBA All-Star Game and balloting was conducted online at wnba.com and in all 14 WNBA arenas across the country.
Monarchs Head Coach John Whisenant was selected as the Head Coach for the West squad on the basis of the Monarchs finish as Conference Champions the previous season. In addition, the entire Monarchs coaching staff will join Whisenant in representing the Monarchs at the All-Star Game.
In addition, for the first time in the WNBA's 10-year history, the league's All-Stars will be wearing special, made-for-this occasion All-Star uniforms. Whereas in the past All-Stars wore their team uniforms, the 2006 Game will see players don "East" and "West" uniforms signifying the conference they represent. Utilizing the creative inspiration of the WNBA's oatmeal and orange basketball icon, the uniforms are a combination of stars, orange and white.
The 2006 WNBA All-Star Game will be hosted by the New York Liberty on Wednesday, July 12 at Madison Square Garden. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN at 7:00 p.m. EDT.
