YMCA to Attend Machine Game
June 26, 2006 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL)
Chicago Machine News Release
This Saturday, the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago will draw hundreds of fans to the Chicago Machine game when the team takes on the Long Island Lizards. Throughout its history, the YMCA has been at the forefront of sports. It was at the YMCA where basketball, volleyball, and racquetball were first invented, and as the sport of lacrosse continues to expand throughout the country, it is not surprising the "Y" will develop more lacrosse programs to continue the expansion of the sport among young athletes.
"With the YMCA's history of athletics, a Chicago Machine professional lacrosse game is a fantastic event for our organization to attend," said Stephen S. Cole, President and CEO of the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago. "Beginning this fall, the YMCA will introduce its youth lacrosse programs to children throughout the area, whether they are from the inner-city or surrounding suburban communities."
Doug Shanahan, Chicago Machine midfielder and Team USA player, is the coordinator for YMCA youth lacrosse programs in the Chicagoland area. Shanahan has scored 10 goals for the Machine this season - three of them being 2-point goals - and holds a face-off record of 71-139 in 2006.
Cole will conduct the honorary face-off at this weekend's game. Face-off is set for 7 p.m. at the Sports Complex at Benedictine University this Saturday, July 1, 2006. Gates open at 5 p.m.
