Carl Nissen Named Machine Team Doctor
BOSTON, Mass. (May 6, 2010) - Dr. Carl W. Nissen, M.D. has been named as the team doctor for the Chicago Machine during the 2010 season, it has been announced by Machine President John Algie.
Currently the director of Elite Sports Medicine at the Connecticut Children's Medical Center, Dr. Nissen brings a wealth of medical training to the Machine staff. A 1981 graduate of Princeton University, Dr. Nissen attended the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. He also attended Columbia University, Syracuse University, Hobart College and Western Connecticut State University.
"Having the opportunity to be a part of lacrosse on its highest level is exciting for me," Dr. Nissen said. "I look forward to being a part of the growing tradition working with the Chicago Machine and the MLL."
After spending four years at the University of Connecticut, Dr. Nissen completed a one-year fellowship in sports medicine at Cincinnati Sports Medicine.
He was honored with the Harry A. Gossling Award by the University of Connecticut as the Orthopaedic Educator of the Year in 2007-08 and earned the Bantam Award by Trinity College in 2000-01 for distinguished contributions to the Trinity sports program.
An avid lacrosse fan, Dr. Nissen was a three-year starter for Princeton University and played in the USILA North-South Game as a senior. He also coached at Hobart College from 1981 to 1984 alongside current Machine Coach B.J. O'Hara.
In addition to his work with the Machine, Dr. Nissen is the team physician for Trinity College in Hartford, Conn. and also serves as a consultant for Quinnipiac University and St. Joseph's College. He is also an Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Connecticut.
Dr. Nissen is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and has a Certificate of Orthopaedic Sports Medicine.
The 2010 Major League Lacrosse season begins on Saturday, May 15. The Machine will play their entire 2010 regular season as a travel team with games announced for North Carolina on May 16, Pittsburgh on May 30, Albany on June 12, Virginia Beach on June 20, Rochester on June 25, and Columbus on July 10.
