Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz News Release
OKLAHOMA CITY - The Yard Dawgz continue to add local talent to an already impressive roster. Head Coach Sparky McEwen officially announced the additions of former Oklahoma State University standout Martel Van Zant and University of Central Oklahoma defensive back Fred Shaw.
Martel Van Zant (6-0, 210) joins the Yard Dawgz after playing one season with the Manchester Wolves of the arenafootball2 league. In 2009, the OSU graduate played in 11 games, finishing with 33 tackles, 1 interception and a fumble recovery. Van Zant played for Head Coach Mike Gundy from 2004-2007.
"During his tryout with our franchise, I was pleased with his size and athleticism. I feel strongly about his ability to play the indoor game," Head Coach McEwen said.
Fred Shaw (6-2, 200) returns to the Yard Dawgz for his fifth season. Last year, the former two way player became a defensive star, finishing the 2009 campaign with 63 tackles, 9 interceptions, 3 fumble recoveries, 2 forced fumbles and 1 blocked kick. In his career, Shaw has 169 tackles, 13 interceptions, 7 fumble recoveries and 4 forced fumbles. Shaw is best known for his catch in 2008 against state rival Tulsa Talons, in which he caught a Hail Mary pass after it ricocheted off the net as time expired. The play was featured on ESPN's Sportscenter Top Ten Plays of the Day.
"Returning Fred Shaw to the Yard Dawgz organization means we have returned quality veteran experience," McEwen added.
The Yard Dawgz will play all their 2010 home games at the Cox Convention Center in downtown Oklahoma City. The regular season begins in April and runs through July with playoffs in August.
Yard Dawgz season tickets are available now for the 2010 season, starting as low as $63! For additional information, please call (405) 228-3294 or visit www.okcyarddawgz.com.
