December 8, 2009 - Arena Football League (AFL)
Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz News Release
OKLAHOMA CITY - Head Coach Sparky McEwen announced the addition of three more players to the roster. The Yard Dawgz were assigned former Ottawa University Wide Receiver Timon Marshall, Florida State University Quarterback Xavier Lee and Grand Valley State Defensive Back Corey Edwards.
Timon Marshall (5'10, 180) emerged on the scene as an arena league star in 2004 while with the Yard Dawgz. The young wide receiver joined Al Hunt and Kris Peters to form a trio of 1,000 yard receivers dubbed the "Golden Retrievers." In six seasons in the Arena Football League and arenafootball2, Marshall has 428 receptions for 5,535 yards and 101 touchdowns. In addition to being a receiving threat, he is also dangerous in the return game with 332 returns for 6,553 yards and 11 touchdowns. Marshall was invited to National Football League training camps after the 2007 (Chicago Bears) and 2008 (Kansas City Chiefs) Arena Football League seasons. In 2006, he teamed with Dawgz new addition Anthony Hines to lead the Grand Rapids Rampage and Head Coach Sparky McEwen to a top 3 offense in the league. Together, they combined for 226 receptions for 2,677 yards and 44 touchdowns. Marshall was a three-time All-Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference selection at wide receiver and a four-year letterman at Ottawa (KS) University. He is the school's all-time leader in touchdowns (39) and points scored (234). As a senior in 2001, he scored 20 touchdowns for the Braves (including one on a 100-yard kickoff return), setting a single-season school record.
"Timon Marshall will give our offense the deep threat that all AF1 teams look for. With his ability to change the game on a kick off return or one offensive play, Marshall truly puts fear into opposing teams," Head Coach McEwen said. "I am excited to have the opportunity to coach one of the most talented and classy guys in AF1. Timon is a quality player not only on the field but also off of the field because of his service to the community. It is refreshing to say this is a pro athlete that truly gets it."
Xavier Lee (6'4, 235) joins the Yard Dawgz for his second season of arena football. In 2009, he caught 35 passes for 358 yards and 8 touchdowns in four games for the Arkansas Twisters in the arenafootball2. Lee signed with the Baltimore Ravens of the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2008 after leaving college early for the draft. Lee committed to Florida State University after a stellar high school career. He was named Florida's Mr. Football and the state's 3A Player of the Year in 2002 and 2003. According to rivals.com, Lee was rated the No. 1 dual threat quarterback recruit in the nation. He will play wide receiver and quarterback for Coach McEwen.
"Xavier gives us a number of options because of his unbelievable athleticism. While at Florida State, Xavier displayed the potential to be an outstanding quarterback in a major program. We look for him to be a dual threat as both a receiver and quarterback. Xavier is one of many athletes that we have signed that is still on the NFL radar because of his ability to play multiple positions," McEwen added.
Corey Edwards (6'0, 185) is a rookie from Grand Valley State University. The former Lakers defensive back had 71 tackles, 17 pass breakups, 6 interceptions and 1 touchdown in his career. The Yard Dawgz signed Edwards after an open tryout in Grand Rapids.
The Yard Dawgz will play all their 2010 home games at the Cox Convention Center in downtown Oklahoma City. The regular season begins in April and runs through July with playoffs in August.
Yard Dawgz season tickets are available now for the 2010 season, starting as low as $63! For additional information, please call (405) 228-3294 or visit www.okcyarddawgz.com.
