August 15, 2012 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release
Pawtucket, MA - Entering play on Wednesday night at McCoy Stadium, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees and Pawtucket Red Sox were separated by one game in the IL North with the Yankees holding the advantage. Pawtucket had a chance to overtake Scranton/WB with a double header sweep but the Yankees put those aspirations to rest with a 5-1 win in game one. The Red Sox pulled back to within one game of SWB with a rained shortened 5-2, five inning win in the second game.
For the second consecutive night the Paw Sox jumped out in front early with Mauro Gomez getting in the middle of things for the Sox. Gomez led off the top of the second inning off Yankees starter Ramon Ortiz (WP, 11-5) with a double to left, moved to third on a fly ball to right field and with one out scored on Jason Repko's sacrifice fly to left for a 1-0 Red Sox lead.
After struggling with Pawtucket starter Daisuke Matsuzaka (LP, 0-3) through the first four innings, picking up only a Francisco Cervelli single with two out in the second inning, the Yankees finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth. SWB put the first two runners on base with a Matsuzaka walk to Ronnier Mustelier and Cervelli getting hit with a pitch. Melky Mesa doubled inside the bag at third scoring Mustelier from second to tie the game at 1-1. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre took a 3-1 lead on a two RBI single to center from Kosuke Fukudome scoring Cervelli and Mesa. After a Chris Dickerson sac bunt was thrown away by Matsuzaka scoring the fourth run of the inning, Corban Joseph's RBI single increased the SWB lead to 5-1.
Ortiz cruised after the second inning, not running into any difficulty until the top of the seventh when Pawtucket put two runners on base with two out. The right hander would finish what he started completing the game on 117 pitches picking up his team leading 11th win of the season allowing six hits with one run, one walk and six strikeouts.
Game two of the twin bill saw the Red Sox jump out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning off SWB starter Manny Delcarmen (LP, 3-5) picking up the first run of the night on a throwing error by the Yankees pitcher on a line drive that Delcarmen knocked down and overshot Fukudome at first base scoring Iglesias from first. Gomez made it 2-0 with a single to right field scoring Linares who ended up at third following the Delcarmen error.
The Paw Sox made it 5-0 in the third inning on a three run homer from Andy LaRoche in the third inning off Delcarmen. The Red Sox put the first two runners on base with a leadoff walk to Linares and a single from Gomez before LaRoche's second homer of the series and 11th on the season.
The Yankees scored one in the fourth and one in the fifth inning off Pawtucket starter Nelson Figueroa (WP, 10-4) but could get no closer than three runs at 5-2. Ronnier Mustelier's sacrifice fly in the fourth scored Kevin Russo who single and went to second on Dickerson's one out double. In the fifth inning in a driving rain SWB scored a run on a double play ground ball off the bat of Darnell McDonald. Despite the driving rain the inning continued until the game became official after the top of the fifth, with the tarp being put on the field and the game delayed within seconds of the inning ending.
The series continues on Thursday night with the Yankees back to serving as the home team at McCoy Stadium. Left hander Justin Thomas (1-1, 3.38 ERA) gets the start for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, while Pawtucket will send right hander Steven Wright (0-0, 3.60) to the mound. First pitch from McCoy Stadium is slated for 7:05 PM.
