Yankee Offense Explodes to Down IronPigs 8-5

Allentown, PA - In the game of baseball, scoring first is usually a good thing, however not in this series. The Yankees overcame an early 1-0 deficit to earn a 8-5 victory over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on Independence Day at Coca-Cola Field in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

The IronPigs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the home half of the first inning. With one out in the inning, Pete Orr sent a sacrifice fly out to centerfield allowing Kevin Frandsen to score from third. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre struck right back with a thre-run top half of the third. Cole Garner provided the first run of the inning with an RBI double to left field, plating Russell Branyan. Gustavo Molina then gave the Yankees a 3-1 lead on a two-RBI double, which landed just shy of the centerfield wall. Brandon Laird and Cole Garner scored on the Molina double.

The Yankee offense wasn't done there as they added three more runs in the top half of the third inning on a Brandon Laird three-run blast to right-centerfield. Laird's second homer in as many nights gave Scranton/Wilkes-Barre the 6-1 advantage after three innings of play. Corban Joseph gave the Yankees an insurance run on an RBI double to right field. Molina came around to score, avoiding Tuffy Gosewisch's tag at the plate with a fantastic slide, getting his hand on the plate just in time. Russell Branyan capped the Yankee scoring with a mammoth home run into the right field patio. Branyan's 11th homer of the year gave the Yankees a 8-1 lead after 5 1/2 innings of play.

The IronPigs began their comeback effort in the home half of the sixth inning. Michael Spidale started the rally with an RBI single to center. Michael Martinez then brought Lehigh Valley to within 8-5 with a three-run homer over the centerfield wall. It was Martinez's first home run of the season.

Nelson Figueroa earned the win for the Yankees, improving to 6-2 on the year. The veteran right-hander tossed six innings allowing five runs on eight hits. He struck out one and didn't walk a batter. Scott Elarton was credited with the loss for the IronPigs, allowing seven runs on nine hits. He struck out three and walked four, falling to 5-6 on the season. Corey Wade tossed one perfect relief inning in his first appearance since being sent down from New York. Chase Whitley contributed with a perfect eighth inning, while Ryota Igarashi picked up the save for the Yankees.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Lehigh Valley continue the five game, five-day series Thursday night at 7:05. The only difference is, the Yankees will be the home team for the final two days at Coca-Cola Park. Right-hander Adam Warren (5-5, 3.86) makes his first appearance since coming down from the New York Yankees, while southpaw Pat Misch (5-9, 4.24) heads to the hill for the IronPigs. With the win, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre is now just 3.5 games behind Lehigh Valley for the International League North lead.
