Bellingham Slam News Release
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The Yamhill Highflyers overcame a 13-point second half deficit to edge the Bellingham Slam, 115-114, in an International Basketball League game on Saturday at Whatcom Pavilion.
The Slam appeared to be in control of the game, leading by as much as 17 points in the first half before the Highflyers began to mount a comeback. Bellingham led at halftime, 62-58.
Yamhill tied the game with their first two shots of the third quarter, before Bellingham used a 12-0 run to take an 81-69 lead with four minutes left in the frame.
But it was nearly all Yamhill in the fourth quarter, as they used a 12-0 run of their own to tie the game at 98-98 with 6:41 left. They went on to take their first lead of the game, at 113-112, on a technical free throw with 34 seconds left in the game. But Ryan Diggs gave the Slam the lead back, at 114-113 by hitting a pair of foul shots with 14 seconds remaining. With the last shot, Yamhill's Cheyenne Moore drove to the basket and drew contact, and hit his resulting charity shots to put the Highflyers back up by one with two seconds left. A desperation half-court shot by the Slam was well short.
The loss spoiled a solid outing by Bellingham's Jacob Stevenson and Ryan Diggs, who scored 32 and 30 points, respectively. Ike Ohanson finished with 18 points and ten rebounds.
Cheyenne Moore led four Yamhill players to reach the 20-point plateau with 29 points.
Things don't get easier for the Slam, as they travel to Edmonton for a three game set with the Energy beginning on Thursday. They return home on May 31 to take on the Olympia Reign, with a 5 p.m. tip-off set for Whatcom Pavilion.
