Y'alls Drop Pitchers' Duel, Boomers Take Series Opener

Florence Y'alls News Release
SCHAUMBURG, IL - For the third consecutive game, the Florence Y'alls came back from a multi-run deficit to pull within one run in the eighth inning, but again tonight the comeback fell just a little bit short in a 2-1 loss to Schaumburg at Wintrust Field.
Down by two in the eighth, Florence's Andres Rios drove a single to left field to score Ray Zuberer, who had knocked a double earlier in the inning. That represented the only run and the only multi-hit inning of the night for Florence. The Y'alls put the tying run on first base in the ninth, but Axel Johnson lined into a double play to end the ballgame and gave Jake Joyce his first save of the season.
Florence scored three runs in the eighth inning Wednesday night and scored four in the eighth last night, each time pulling within a 7-6 score. Factoring in the 2-1 loss on Tuesday, the Y'alls have three one-run losses on this road trip. They have lost four in a row overall, while Schaumburg has won four in a row.
Neither lineup could get anything going early on against two really solid pitchers. Aaron Glickstein went five 2/3 scoreless innings for the Boomers with nine strikeouts and just three hits allowed. Jared Cheek tossed five 2/3 innings as well, featuring seven strikeouts. Neither pitcher walked a batter.
Thomas DeBonville led off the fifth inning with a solo home run, and Braxton Davidson brought home a run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth to give the Boomers the 2-0 lead. Both runs were charged to Cheek and he takes the tough-luck loss. DeBonville, Clint Hardy, and Chase Dawson all had two hits for the Boomers, and Zuberer had two for the Y'alls. Cameron Pferrer, Karl Craigie, and Darwin Ramos kept the Boomers scoreless in their relief efforts to give the Y'alls' bats a chance.
Tonight was a rematch of the 2021 Frontier League Divisional Round from last season's playoffs. The Boomers beat the Y'alls in that series on their way to winning the championship against Washington. Florence looks to get back on track tomorrow, Saturday, July 2, in the second game of the four-game series against the Boomers. Alex Wagner makes his first start of the season for the Y'alls against Schaumburg's Kyle Arjona. First pitch is at 3:05 PM CDT from Wintrust Field.
