Pittsburgh Xplosion News Release
The Pittsburgh Xplosion opened the 2007-2008 CBA season with a 123-118 overtime win over the East Kentucky Miners tonight at the Petersen Events Center.
Odell Bradley's three-pointer with 2:20 left in overtime gave the Xplosion the lead for good at 116-114. Bradley led the Xplosion with 34 points, 18 coming in the fourth quarter and overtime. Bradley notched a double-double, adding 11 rebounds.
East Kentucky's Bryant Northern tied the score at 108-108 with 56.9 seconds remaining on his first free throw, but missed the second. Baker missed a baseline jumper as the shot clock expired, but the Xplosion got the offensive rebound. After a timeout, Shaun Fountain was fouled on a jumper with 7.2 seconds to play, but he missed both free throws.
The Miners had a chance as time expired, but Josh Pace's leaner fell short. Pace led East Kentucky with 26 points and 12 rebounds. James Jackson added 21 points and 15 rebounds for East Kentucky, playing in their first-ever CBA game.
The Miners took early control and opened their largest lead at 11 on a Bryant Northern three pointer with four minutes to play in the first quarter at 24-13. With two minutes to play in the period and Pittsburgh trailing 31-21, Xplosion head coach Carlos Knox put Fountain and Krauser together in the backcourt. Pittsburgh promptly went on a 9-0 run to the end the quarter, and continued the surge into the second. In all, the Xplosion went on a 16-2 run punctuated by a Krauser steal and behind-the-back bounce pass to Kevin Mickens for a lay-in.
In 25 minutes, Krauser scored 7 points while adding 5 assists and 5 rebounds. Mickens added 33 points and 8 rebounds.
The Miners did hold on and win the first quarter point, 31-30, and retained their lead throughout the second period. Northern and Pace led East Kentucky with 12 points apiece in the half, giving the Miners a first-half sweep.
With the overtime win, the Xplosion earned a 4-3 win in quarter points over East Kentucky. The Xplosion will travel to play the Miners Sunday afternoon at 4:05.
