Pittsburgh Xplosion News Release
PITTSBURGH, November 25, 2007 - A 23-8 second quarter run fueled the Pittsburgh Xplosion over the Rio Grande Valley Silverados, 124-96, tonight at the Petersen Events Center. The run began with Shaun Fountain joining Carl Krauser in the backcourt with 9:45 to play in the first half, and the Xplosion up, 35-31. The pair played together for the remainder of the half, leading the Xplosion to a 65-48 halftime lead.
"Those two guys were the catalysts for what happened tonight with our whole team," Xplosion head coach Carlos Knox said. "We're blessed to be able to play with two point guards because they are so talented."
Outstanding perimeter defense by Pittsburgh forced the Silverados into many late possessions resulting in forced shots and 27 Rio Grande Valley turnovers. John DeGroat led the Xplosion with five steals. Fountain and Lawrence Baker each had three of Pittsburgh's 15 total steals.
The Pittsburgh offense did not disappoint, either. The Xplosion (4-2) notched their highest point total of the season with 124. Six players reached double figures, and every Xplosion player scored at least four points.
"This was a solid team effort and I've very happy with the results that we've been getting," Knox said.
Antonio Graves led the Xplosion scoring for the second consecutive night, pouring in 20 points. DeGroat added 15 points and 15 rebounds. Mike Dean led the Silverados again tonight with 31 points.
The Silverados (0-5) played a much stronger first quarter tonight, leading at various points in the opening quarter. Point guard Tim Pledger led Rio Grande Valley with 10 points. Pittsburgh held on to win the quarter point, 29-25.
The Xplosion swept all seven quarter points for the first time in their CBA history. Pittsburgh now travels to Yakama to play the defending league champion SunKings Tuesday and Friday nights. The Xplosion return home Saturday night to host the Albany Patroons at 7:05 PM at Mellon Arena.
