Xplosion add Kevin Frey and Lawrence Baker, release three

PITTSBURGH, February 9, 2007 - The Pittsburgh Xplosion professional basketball team announced today the signing of Lawrence Baker and Kevin Frey to contracts for the 2006-07 season, pending league approval. The Continental Basketball Association club also released Tedric Hill, Isaac Jefferson and Drew Schifino. Mark Williams was placed on inactive reserve.

A CBA rookie, who spent time in training camp with the Xplosion during the fall, Baker attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania from 2004-06. The 6-5 guard led IUP to the PSAC title as a senior in 2006. He captured All-PSAC First Team honors that year after averaging 20.7 points (30th nationally), 7.9 rebounds and shooting 41 percent from three-point range. The Detroit, Michigan native also spent two seasons at Henry Ford Community College.

Frey joins the Xplosion after playing briefly in Finland. A veteran of overseas and U.S. pro leagues, the Midland, Michigan native played with the CBA's Gary Steelheads for current Xplosion head coach Jaren Jackson in 2005-06. The 6-8 forward was selected in both the NBDL and USBL Drafts and competed in France, Germany and Sweden. Frey played collegiately at Xavier University under Skip Prosser and Thad Matta from 1998-02.

The team also announced it had released three players, Tedric Hill, Isaac Jefferson and Drew Schifino. Schifino, a native of Penn Hills, Pa., who played at West Virginia, appeared in four games for the Xplosion. Jefferson, a 6-5 guard, was the lone remaining holdover from the team's 2005-06 ABA team that went 18-12. The Columbus, Ohio native and Hampton University graduate appeared in 26 games for the Black and Gold, including 12 starts. He averaged 7.0 points and 8.2 rebounds per contest. Hill, a 6-10 center, averaged 4.0 points and 3.5 rebounds in 10 games with the club.

Marc Williams, who was a teammate of Baker's at IUP, was placed on the club's inactive reserve list. He appeared in 26 games for the Xplosion, making six starts. He averaged 8.6 points and 2.8 assists.
