Xplorers Take Control

July 20, 2005 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release

CHICAGO - The Memphis Xplorers captured the No.1 ranking in Week 17 of the Weekly Coaches Poll, the arenafootball2 (af2) league office announced today.

The Xplorers 221-point total included twelve first-place votes in securing the No.1 ranking. Just behind Memphis in the No.2 ranking, the defending ArenaCup Champion Florida Firecats received 210 points and seven first place tallies. The Manchester Wolves fall to the No.3 spot with 194 points after five consecutive weeks in the No.1 spot.

The arenafootball2 Week 17 schedule features four matchups of Top 12 teams. On Saturday night at 7:30, the No.3 Manchester Wolves look to regain their footing in Kentucky against the No.6 ranked Louisville Fire. Also on Saturday night at 8:00 the No.4 Tulsa Talons play host to the No.9 ranked Amarillo Dusters. The No.2 ranked and defending ArenaCup Champion Florida Firecats head to the heated tundra of the Resch Center to challenge the No.9 Green Bay Blizzard on Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. At 8:30 the No.5 Rio Grande Valley welcome the No.7 ranked Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz to the Dodge Arena. All Times Eastern.

Each week during the season af2 coaches will vote for the Top 12 teams in the league by ranking them one through 12 on a ballot. Teams ranked first receive 12 points with the point value decreasing by one for each place below first, meaning a team ranked 12th would receive one point. Total points will determine the Top 12 list. In the event of a tie in total points, the team with the greater number of first-place votes will be ranked higher. The af2 Coaches Poll will be announced every Wednesday during the regular season. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team and the poll results have no bearing on postseason qualification.

The complete Top 12 is listed below. The number in parentheses indicates the number of first place votes the team received.
