Memphis Xplorers News Release
Southaven, MS-The Memphis Xplorers of the af2 will host the Quad City Steamwheelers tomorrow night at the DeSoto Civic Center. The Steamwheelers are the only team in the af2 to defeat the Xplorers in 2005.
In week five, Memphis took their undefeated record to the Mark of the Quad Cities in Moline, IL. The game came down to the final seconds, and it was all tied up at 42. Quad City was facing a long field goal attempt of 45 yards. The snap was high and the ball bounced in the back right side of the end zone. Quad City kicker Nick Gatto was able to recover the football and "punt" it downfield. Memphis OS Kevin Prentiss returned the kick across midfield before he was taken out of bounds with no time remaining on the clock. There were multiple flags on the field, and the ruling that emerged was an illegal kick by Quad City, and two personal fouls against the Xplorers.
The officiating crew took a few minutes to decide the ruling, before issuing Quad City an untimed down, and an additional field goal attempt. This time the Steamwheelers got a good snap, and Gatto put the ball through the uprights.
"I was very upset with the ruling on the field," said Xplorers Head Coach Danton Barto. "We should not have even put ourselves in a position to lose that game. It was a tough loss, but we still have the players to win the ArenaCup."
Since the loss, the Xplorers have put together another four game win streak. On the other side, Quad City has lost four of five, which puts them in a tough position for a playoff run. Memphis is currently atop the Mid West Division of the National Conference, and is tied for the best overall record in the league with Manchester and Florida.
"Quad City is a good team," said Barto. "We have had a good week of practice, and we will be ready for these guys."
Game time is scheduled for 7:05pm. Single game tickets start as low as $7 and can be purchased by calling 662-342-1755, visiting the DeSoto Civic Center box office, of by logging onto www.TicketMaster.com today. Memphis Xplorers Arena Football! Back in Black!
