Memphis Xplorers News Release
Southaven, MS-The Memphis Xplorers of the af2 have been assigned WR/DB Stephen Battle by the af2 league office.
Battle was a Viking at Valley City State in North Dakota. During his collegiate career, Battle set numerous school and conference records. His 3,337 receiving yards are first all time in Viking history. He also holds the school career record for receptions (182), receiving touchdowns (48), and total points scored (332). Battle's single season records include receiving yards (1168), receiving touchdowns (15), and points (110). He also holds four Valley City State single game records such as receiving yards (234), receiving touchdowns (4), pass reception (87 yards), and all purpose yards (293).
The Saint Louis Rams of the NFL signed Battle on April 28, 2003. Prior to the start of the regular season, the team released him.
"Being assigned Stephen Battle is a huge boost to our passing game," stated Xplorers Head Coach Danton Barto. "Being among the last receivers cut by the Rams, which is not an easy to make at that position, speaks to the talent he has."
Joining Battle as a wide receiver is Elgin Hicks, who was assigned to Memphis last week. Hicks was a free agent with the Indianapolis Colts, before being released in late August. "With Battle and Hicks we have two receivers who were among final cuts by two teams that arguably have the best receiving core in the NFL," added Barto.
Xplorers Director of Player Personnel Chris Bauer added, "Battle fits into our model of a productive collegiate player with fringe NFL ability capable of translating to the indoor game."
Battle was a three-time member of the first team All-Conference from 2000 to 2002 at Valley City State. He was an All-American Honorable Mention twice, and a member of the All-American Second Team during 2001. He was also voted Most Valuable Graduating Senior in 2002.
The Xplorers were ten game winners in their 2004 playoff season. For season ticket information call 662-393-3761. Memphis Xplorers Arena Football! Xciting! Xhilirating! Xtreme! Football!
