Central Valley Coyotes News Release
Centralvalleycoyotes.com takes a look back at the 2004 season in a two part piece. The first segment covered the overall teams performance while this segment will focus on impact players of the campaign that should make a significant impact this coming season.
Although the 2004 Central Valley Coyotes struggled to find victories, there were several significant individual contributions throughout the season. Offensive and defensive stars that are looking to continue last years success with Central Valley include:
WR/LB Marvin Brown (5-11, 180 pounds)
Games: 8 Tackles: 20
Receptions: 29
Yards: 334
Touchdowns: 5
Season Review
Although his season was cut short by a broken elbow, Brown proved that he was a reliable asset on offense and defense. He caught nine passes for 85 yards and one touchdown and led the team in tackles in the first two games before suffering the injury in Week 3. Returning in Week 17, he had a five catch, 66 yard performance against Oklahoma City. Looking forward to a full season in 2005, Brown should be primed to become one of the Coyotes featured two-way threats.
DS Kendall Edwards (5-11, 188 pounds)
Games: 5
Tackles: 11
Interceptions: 2
Season Review
Edwards, who joined the Coyotes midway through the season, made an immediate impact on defense. Known for his quickness, he was able to intercept two passes in just five games. With a full year of experience under his belt, the second year star looks to continue the success he found last season and become a fixture on a defensive unit that at times struggled to shut down opponents last year.
WR/LB JaJuan Huddelston (6-3, 235 pounds)
Games: 16 Tackles: 42.5
Receptions: 40 Interceptions: 1
Yards: 364 Sacks: 1
Touchdowns: 6
Season Review
Huddleston, who played all 16 games last season, was third on the team in total receiving and all purpose yards. Defensively, he was second on the team with total tackles while tallying the most tackles in four games. In Week 8, the receiver had his best game of the season against Hawaii, hauling in nine catches for 82 yards and a touchdown and recovering a fumble. While the Coyotes benefited most from his defensive contributions, expect Huddelston to balance his production and play an even bigger role on offense next year.
WR/DB LaMonte Jones (5-8, 175 pounds)
Games: 16 Tackles: 24.5
Receptions: 76
Yards: 865
Touchdowns: 18
Season Review
As most opposing teams keyed on the Coyotes leading receiver, Kenyatte Morgan, rookie LaMonte Jones took advantage. While starting in all 13 games, he was second on the team in scoring and recorded a touchdown in all but three contests. In addition to his consistent offensive production, he was able to help the team defensively while ranking sixth on the team in total tackles. Jones, who was re-assigned to the team during the off-season, will be ready to continue to help the Coyote offense.
OL/DL Rickey Leung-Wai (6-2, 290 pounds)
Games: 11
Tackles: 11.5
Sacks: 6
Season Review
When making the move from the Bakersfield Blitz last season, Leung-Wai became the only member of the original franchise. Despite having his season cut short by a leg injury, the lineman still lead the team in sacks with six, including a three sack performance against Hawaii in Week 9 that helped him earn ADT Defensive Player of the Week honors. As the four year veteran spends the off-season recovering, Leung-Wai should be anxious to pick up where he left off and lead the Coyotes D.
OL/DL Clint Merz (6-3, 250 pounds)
Games: 3
Tackles: 2.5
Sacks: 2
Season Review
Merz, who joined the team for the last three games of the season, made an immediate impact on the line. With two sacks in just three games, the rookie lineman brings along promise when he returns for his first full campaign next year.
OS Kenyatta Morgan (5-10, 180 pounds)
Games: 16 Kickoff Returns: 87
Receptions: 118 Kickoff Return Yards: 1897
Yards: 1472 Special Teams TD returns: 4
Touchdowns: 27 All Purpose Yards: 3458
Season Review
The third-year receiver made quite a name for himself during the 2004 season. During his stellar year, Morgan was the leagues top all-purpose yardage leader. The offensive specialists historical efforts put him second on the leagues all-time single-season yardage list while coming up just 15 yards short of breaking the record of 3,472. Along with being the leagues most productive offensive threat, Morgan was ranked third in the league in receptions and fifth in receiving. Morgan surpassed the 100 yard mark in six games while scoring touchdowns in all but two games. The teams leading receiver also showed his talents on special teams as he became the leagues top return man in total yards. Morgan, who was the brightest spot for the Coyotes in 2004, should continue to be regarded as one of the leagues most valuable players going into next season.
