Xplorers Assigned FB/LB Crew; Former Tiger Scruggs Is Back

SOUTHAVEN, Miss â The Memphis Xplorers announced today the FB / LB crew for the upcoming 2003 season as assigned by af2. The group is highlighted by Jeremy Scruggs, who was an All-af2 selection in 2001 with Memphis for his rushing ability. Bobby Meyers, who helped the Peoria Pirates win the ArenaCup 2002, was also assigned to the Xplorers. The Xplorers 2003 af2 home opener is April 12th against the Bakersfield Blitz. "We are really excited to get these guys," Xplorers head coach Danton Barto said. "We have some tremendous athletes, who are fairly well sized at the position and we feel we have six guys who can start anywhere in the league."
In 2001 Scruggs rushed for 333 yards on 85 attempts and scored 17 touchdowns. Last season Meyers tallied 144 yards rushing and had 4 rushing and 4 receiving touchdowns as he helped Peoria post a 15-5 record.
"I think Scruggs is the best runner in the league," said Barto. "He is a fast, explosive 235-pound fullback with true tailback running ability."
On the defensive side of the ball James Green and Paul Hunter highlight the signings. Green had 21 tackles in 11 games to go with 4.5 sacks. Hunter in 14 games had 23 tackles and two sacks.
"James Green played last year for Mobile and Pensacola," said Barto. "He is a high energy guy, who is a good athlete and possibly a swing guy who can rush the passer."
While Green is a newcomer, Barto is familiar with Hunter.
"He was with us last year and is a very steady player," Barto said. "Last year in an emergency situation he suited up as an OL/ DL for us. He is a good football player who is very reliable."
