Carolina Courage News Release
East Meadow, N.Y. (May 8, 2003) - The Women's Sports Foundation and the Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) announced today a partnership that will bring together seven of the WUSA teams and the Women's Sports Foundation's GoGirlGo Project.
Launched in 2001, the GoGirlGo Project is dedicated to the development and funding of girls' sports programs that combine athletic skill instruction and programming with the delivery of educational information aimed at reducing risk behaviors that threaten the health and social advancement of girls aged 10 to 14.
As part of this collaboration, WUSA teams will host "GoGirlGo Nights" for their local community organizations participating in the GoGirlGo Project. WUSA players will contribute their time and expertise to educate young girls about health risk behaviors and life lessons such as body image, bullying, diversity, smoking, drugs and stress. In turn, GoGirlGo participants will learn more about the WUSA team in their community.
"We are proud to have the WUSA and its players aboard to share the message of the GoGirlGo Project," said Women's Sports Foundation President Dawn Riley. "The Project has had such a positive impact on so many girls thus far - this endeavor will be sure to impart a positive message to young girls and create a stronger bond with the WUSA players."
"The WUSA is proud to be working with the Women's Sports Foundation on this venture," said WUSA Commissioner, Tony DiCicco. "Giving back to the community has always played a significant role with our league and players. The GoGirlGo Project brings together a winning combination of both education and sports that I know will be a great step forward for both organizations."
