The Wichita Wranglers dropped the Springfield Cardinals for a second straight night at Hammons Field. With a 5-2 win on Wednesday night, the Wranglers now hold a four-game lead over the Springfield Cardinals in the Texas League's East Division.
One night after launching four home runs, the Wichita offense provided three more long-balls on Wednesday night. Chris Lambert dominated for the first three innings, but allowed a solo shot to Josh Pressley in the fourth, as the Wranglers took a 1-0 lead.
Mel Stocker's second homer of the year, a solo shot to right field in the fifth, gave the Wranglers a 2-0 advantage. Justin Huber's 13th homer of the season and second in as many games, put the Wranglers up 4-0 in the sixth.
The Cardinals made a run at Wichita starter Kyle Middleton (9-6) in the sixth, as Papo Bolivar's RBI single plated Cody Haerther, making it 4-1. Travis Hanson's ground ball in the seventh scored Brendan Ryan from third, as the Cards made it 4-2. Springfield had the tying run at the plate in both the seventh and eighth, but failed to get any closer.
The Wranglers added a run in the ninth to go up 5-2, then saw Jonah Bayliss work a scoreless ninth inning to record his eighth save of the year.
Lambert (1-3) pitched into the sixth inning, allowing four runs on six hits. Lambert struck out six on the night, walking two.
Brendan Ryan made his Double-A debut for Springfield, going 1-4 with a run scored.
The Cardinals (11-14) host the Wichita Wranglers (15-10) on Thursday night in a game, which will be televised on Fox Sports Midwest. Everyone in the Springfield community is encouraged to wear red on Thursday night for the first Red-Out at Hammons Field.
