WR/LB Darrin Chiaverini Earns US Army Ironman of the Week

March 23, 2005 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I) - Austin Wranglers News Release

Wranglers leading receiver Darrin Chiaverini was named US Army Ironman of the Week for AFL Week Eight. His performance against the New York Dragons included several game-clinching plays including 11 receptions for 103 yards and two touchdowns, and an interception.

“Darrin played an excellent game against the Dragons,” said Wranglers Head Coach Skip Foster. “He executed the game plan well and played very physical. He played equally as well on defense than he played on offense and has continued to improve on all sides of the ball in his second year in the AFL.”

The Wranglers first drive of the game was capped off with a touchdown pass to Chiaverini from QB John Fitzgerald. Todd Sievers PAT kick gave the Wranglers a lead in the game.

In the second quarter of the game, Chiaverini found himself in the right place as Dragon’s QB Aaron Garcia went to throw a pass to the endzone away. The ball rebounded off the nets and Chiaverini snagged the rebound for a 16-yard return. The Wranglers offense road the momentum and converted on the turnover with touchdown.

Chiaverini caught his second touchdown pass with less than a minute left in the first half. The four-yard completion gave the Wranglers a 10-point lead going into the halftime, their largest lead at the half all season.

“I am truly honored to be representing the US Army,” said Chiaverini. “We’re just playing a game and they are overseas protecting our country.”

Chiaverini is the Wranglers leading receiver this season with 59 receptions for 527 yards and 10 touchdowns. On defense he has 13.5 tackles, two for a loss, two interceptions, one blocked pass and a fumble recovery.

The Wranglers travel to take on the Orlando Predators this week. The last time the Wranglers took on the Predators, Chiaverini led the team in receptions (6 for 70 yards) and scored one touchdown. The Wranglers will return to the Frank Erwin Center Friday, April 1 to take-on the New Orleans VooDoo. For ticket information call Texas Box Office at 477.6060.
