Richmond Kickers News Release
RICHMOND, VA - (Monday, October 24, 2005) - The Richmond Kickers are pleased to announce that both forward Matthew Delicâte and midfielder Joey Worthen have been invited to join Major League Soccer (MLS) teams FC Dallas and Real Salt Lake, respectively, on trial.
FC Dallas, exercising their discovery option by selecting Delicâte earlier in the season, has invited him to train as they prepare for the second leg of the playoff series against the Colorado Rapids. Delicâte led the Kickers in scoring in 2005, tallying 12 goals and two assists for 26 points. With four game-winning goals, he was named to the USL First Division Team of the Week four times, more than any other Kickers player.
A native of Salt Lake City, Utah, Worthen is one of eight players invited to train with Real Salt Lake beginning Tuesday, October 25th. Worthen was hampered by injury for most of his second season with the Kickers. An offensive threat on the left side of the field, he finished the 2005 season with three goals in 16 appearances.
"We are very pleased that Matthew and Joey have this exciting opportunity to secure a spot on a MLS roster," comments Richmond Kickers Head Coach Leigh Cowlishaw. Both have been outstanding players for the Kickers and they deserve this chance. We sincerely hope they will continue the fine tradition of Kickers moving to MLS."
In franchise history, the Richmond Kickers have sent 20 players to Major League Soccer. Former Kickers players who have advanced to MLS include Mike Clark (Columbus Crew), Dwayne DeRosario (San Jose Earthquakes), Brian Kamler (D.C. United, Miami Fusion, New England Revolution), Brian Bates (Colorado Rapids, Dallas Burn), Scott Budnick (Miami Fusion, Tampa Bay Mutiny), Scott Cannon (Colorado Rapids, Columbus Crew, Tampa Bay Mutiny), Jeff Causey (New England Revolution, D.C.
